Gervais Sutherland received a hero's funeral. He had given up his seat on the fire wagon for two young children who were lost in the smokey streets.He then tried to make his way to the lake, where he may have thought to find the other volunteer firemen. When the turn to the lake appeared impassable, he kept walking straight, hoping to reach saftey, until he collapsed from smoke inhalation.
His body was found after the fire near the Cathedral, where he had sought refuge and he was only identified by his belt buckle and the keys to his house.
