Many of the magnificent cottages on the East Beach were constructed beginning in 1896 after wealthy townsmen purchased lakefront lots. It was originally intended that the cottages be enjoyed by family and friends during the summer months. However, so many people began visiting Port Bowmanville that residents soon opened their homes to tourists.
