Heintz's call to the Findlays was overheard by a brother-in-law of the Findlay sisters who happened to be visiting the Findlays with his wife, Biddy, that weekend.

Acting Sergeant Allan Stringer was on leave from the Timmins, Ontario detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police and had arrived at the Findlays the night before. As soon as he heard Heintz's call he left in his car, unarmed, for the station.
