Norvan Boon in conversation with Carrie Trout

June 2005, Drumheller, Alberta

Norvan Boon: "Ya, in 1938 my dad decided to get more power, he needed different machinery, so, he decided to trade his horses off to either a John Deere dealer or a Massey dealer which was both in Delia. Bill Fitzsimmons was the Massey dealer and Elza [Lyttle] Long was the John Deere dealer. So anyway, he went into see these fellows and they came out to look at the horses. So he traded seven horses off and Elza [Lyttle] Long gave him sixty dollars more than Bill Fitzsimmons on a Massey tractor…so anyway this is what the deal was. So, we bought a brand new tractor which was a steel wheel tractor, one that you crank by hand, a John Deere "D." And we also bought a binder, an eight foot binder, also a rod weeder, a disc which was only ten feet wide and also a seven-and-a-half foot tiller. And…if I recall the price of them all, even with the tractor was about $4,600.00. So he traded these seven horses off to Elza [Lyttle] Long for this line of machinery… he had to pay...he traded the horses off and he may of only got fifty dollars for a horse or maybe sixty but he had to pay the rest off in cash. That is when we decided to go to the tractor and I figured then it was a good deal."
