In 1917, the Honorable H.C. Brewster, who was premier of B.C. at the time, rode on horseback across the portage.

This event is pictured here Albert Huble noted this event in his diary of September 6th, 1917. His entry read: "Worked on the new road. Brewster and party arrived". Given that Al wrote that Brewster arrived, it is probable that Brewster and his party stayed the night and dined with the Huble's, as many travelers (including prominent travelers) did. The Huble house on the Giscome Portage was very much like a Cariboo roadhouse, only travelers went by way of watercourses (including the Fraser River and many lakes and streams) rather than a wagon road.
