Roza and her Dogs

Directly across the road there used to be a big pile of rock. And on top of that rock there used to be an old shack. And in that shack lived a woman called Rosie Brown who chased me many a time because I stopped and petted her dogs and would not hesitate to take her cane and swing at you and hit you because you were nice to her dogs.

Roza had other passions which she pursued with great vigour.

She was a great fan of movies and made an effort to attend the openings of all the movie theatres in the community.

Her animals - Roza maintained a parade of animals including many dogs which trailed after her wherever she went.

Finally the British Royal Family which doted on from afar.

And uh, this is Roza Brown... standing in the lane behind actually the United Cigar Store (15 Government Road West), behind the Korman Building. And uh, the occasion was a clean-up job of the lane being done by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. And she lived up the lane in a little house up the lane and when she saw us working there she came out and encouraged us. Told us we were doing a good job and stayed and watched us for a while. And I chose this picture because one of the dogs was in it. It is not a good picture. There were two or three dogs with her but they didn't, they weren't standing close enough to be included at the time. But she was dressed in her warm coat. It was in the wintertime.

N. Kaplan: And she was also the first patron in the Capital and the first patron in the Uptown, and followed, followed by her dogs

C. McChesney: Did she always bring her dogs to the movies when ever she went?

N. Kaplan: Always brought her dogs.

C. McChesney: Did that create kind of a disturbance for the other patrons or did they just ignore it?

N. Kaplan: No, No, people knew her and did not say anything.

The Royal family proved to be her other great love. A life-long supporter of the monarchy, it is said that she regularly sent telegrams to Buckingham palace on special occasions. Legend has it that Roza was present at the landing of the royal couple, George VI and Queen Elizabeth at Quebec City in 1939. It is said that after making her away on to the reception platform she presented the Royal Couple with a black lamb - a gift to the Royal Princesses, Elizabeth and Margaret.
