BULK CARRIERS AND BARGES - Crushed stone is transported to U.S. and Caribbean markets by Panamax and cape-style class ships capable of carrying 60,000 to 70,000 tonne loads. Approximately 90% of the product produced at the quarry is shipped via ocean going barges or self-loading bulk carrier vessels.The deep tidewater of the Strait of Canso provides an excellent, ice free, saltwater harbour that makes it possible to ship aggregates economically to relatively distant offshore destinations .
Crushing operations are discontinued during the winter months but shipping activity is carried out on a year round basis.

STOCKPILING COAL- The marine material handling capabilities has also enabled the company to unload coal imported by Nova Scotia Power Inc., temporarily stockpiling and re-loading the coal on to rail cars for their plants in Point Tupper and Trenton. The company employs approximately ninety people including seasonal and casual workers and spends in excess of $10 million annually on equipment supplies and contract services.

ABUNDANT RESERVES The quarry at Porcupine Mountain is reported to have abundant reserves of over 400 million tonnes of high quality rock. The formation comprises a pink to buff coloured Devonian granite that has all of the properties needed for high strength concrete mixes and long wearing hot mix asphalt.

FEDERAL GYPSUM COMPANY
Louisiana Pacific, a major North American firm best known for innovative panel products, located in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia in 1990.The 170,000 square foot plant helped the environment by using old newspapers and magazines which normally ended up in landfill sites was used as raw material in plant's manufacturing process. The recycled paper was used with gypsum and perlite, a type of volcanic rock, to produce a wallboard that was more durable than conventional gypsum wallboard. Fiberock was the only product produced at the Point Tupper facility. Approximately 95% of the Fiberock product was shipped to US markets and approximately 4% was shipped to Quebec and Ontario; 1% was shipped throughout the Atlantic provinces. The United States Gypsum plant in Point Tupper closed in 2002 putting 75 employees out of work.
In July 2004, an announcement was made by Federal Gypsum Company to take over and transform the former gypsum wallboard plant.

CAPE BRETON AND CENTRAL NOVA SCOTIA RAILWAY - In the early 1990's, an American rail company, Railtex, bought the remaining railroad - that is, the Sydney to Point Tupper and Port Hastings line - from Canadian National, along with the line from the Canso Causeway to Truro, forming the Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia Railway. Rail service in the Strait Area is an important part of the transportation requirements for major industries in Point Tupper, Richmond County.

MULGRAVE MARINE TERMINAL had a major facility reconstruction which was officially opened in 2004 including a 35,000 square foot wahehouse facility, offices, storage areas, wharf resurfacing and secondary access roads. Newark Drilling Fluids of Houston, Texas has set up a $1.3 million facility which would supply liquid mud for use by offshore drilling rigs.
With two and a half acres of lay down wharf area, the Mulgrave Marine Terminal is open to a wide range of marine services.

EAST COAST HYDRAULICS LIMITED was begun by Dana Feltmate and Chris Topp in 1984 in Mulgrave, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia, Canada to service the fishing and marine industries with marine hydraulics sales and service. Now owned and operated by Dana , the company employs about 15 people in their 10,000 square foot office and mechanical bay location in the brand new Mulgrave Marine Terminal . They have branches in Dartmouth and Newfoundland as well employing another 45 people.
