In the 1960's team roping, in which one contestant ( the header) ropes a steer's head and the other ( the heeler) ropes its hind feet, was added to the program.

"In the 1970's just about every family at Wood Mountain took up team roping. It was an activity the whole family could take part in. Like the Roy family, Norman could rope with Darcy and then Darcy could rope with Darby and Darby could rope with Davey and so forth. Every weekend there was a jackpot roping."

Whether roping, or steer wrestling, or barrel racing three factors come into play - the skill of the contestant, the ability of the horse and the communication between the horse and rider. It usually takes years to train a good rodeo horse.

"Tiny , a sorrel, came off a mare Ken Kerr had in his bucking string. Her sire was a bay quarter horse owned by George Pana and later on by Cliff Stevenson of Canopus. Art Colibaba got Tiny from Ken Kerr and I bought her from Art as a two year old. I trained her myself and roped off her from 1961 to 1975. I won at the Wood Mountain rodeo five times off this mare."

The Regional Park worked with the Canada Centennial Committee in 1967 and constructed a new hall on the location of the old bowery. Rodeo dances were held there for many years.

"In 1969 we played for the Wood Mountain rodeo. We were just kids and we never expected to get hired. Usually somebody like the Melody Five from Rockglen or the Southern Four from Fir Mountain were hired. There was four of us in our band, Don Chubey, Don Petersen, Morley Eklund and myself. We called ourselves the Lovin' Bottlefulls. We played all those western songs, like Marty Robbins and Jim Reeves. And some of those popular 1960's songs like Henry the VIII."
