George and Will Butters, Louis McDuffee and I played together a great deal, with close social contacts growing out of this athletic association. We had a court on the south side of the house (Carrollcroft) and the Butters (Broadview) had one on their front lawn. Here we had practice
games in which the young ladies participated to some extent, and matches with other teams in the county, particularly with that
from East Hatley.

Her father represented Stanstead County in Parliament from 1867-1891 and held the important offices of both Speaker of the
House and President the Privy Council. Hence Jessie Colby's youth was spent in the stimulating world of the college and national politics. She frequently visited Ottawa, enjoying both the social events and the affairs of the House of Commons. It is apparent that her father began to count on her as an un-official assistant.
