To help ease the unemployment situation as a result of the depresion the government organized make work projects. One of the more significant make work projects in Saskatoon was the construction of the weir just upstream from the 33rd Street Canadian National Railway bridge on the South Saskatchewan river. The weir was constructed to help maintain the water level in the river for the water treatment plant that provided driking water for the city.

One June 6, 1939 The King and Queen of England visited Saskatoon as part of a Canadian tour. The city organized a grand reception and residents enthusiastically welcomed the Royal couple. The Royal tour was seen as an effort to support British interests in Canada given the growing threat of conflict in Europe.
