Both Shigehisa and Tome Hikichi were haiku enthusiasts and members of the community's Aobakai Club. Tome wrote many poems under her pen name, 'Wakako'.Tome passed away in 1955. Shigehisa returned to Japan in 1960, to live with his son Hisao. He passed away in 1970.
