Tommy is in the Old Country

by this time. I don't know

when he will be coming

back. There is lots of work

here everywhere. I see in

the paper that the European

Rothschilds are to buy up the

Nickel fields around here

to try + monopolise[sic] the

Nickel market. I don't

wonder at the Fort[?] Yards

being hard up for skilled

labor + mechanics. All the

mechanics are going to

Australia + Canada. There

won't be anybody left in

England soon. Scott's death

at the South pole came as

a great suprise[sic] to everybody

here. Great sorrow intermingled

with pride is felt here +

throut[sic] Canada. I hope

Aunt Julia is better. I wish

she could give up living

with Charlie + have it

a little quieter somewhere.

Give my regards to Percy

Leteher + all. Len

I have written about those

apples but I have not

received any answe[sic]

Tommy is back again now

but I think he was pretty

sea-sick, for he has only

worked one day since he was

back. I am sorry to hear

this about George Oliver

he is such a nice fellow.

Jack says in his letter

that he is now living with

Charles Webber + that he

is well cared for. Reeves

is in Montreal but Jack

doesn't know what part.

I suppose Miss Edith Thomas

is away up in the world now

I should give her the cold

shoulder next time she

comes around. Remember

me to Aunt Julia + all.

Death Father + Sisters,

Received postcards

a few days ago + I certainly

can recognize the places, they

seem quite familiar to me anyway.

I had a P.C. from both Jack

+ Chrissie yesterday. When I

wrote her I addressed her as

"Dear Mrs. Giles" so I go an

answer back to say that her

name was "Chrissie" + she hoped

I hadn't forgotten it, also that

she is not going to answer any

more P. Cards until I write her

a long letter. This is a photo

of the inside of our candy store

All the girls are English + this

is certainly the place for ice-cream

in the Summer. We have been

having most glorious weather

these last few days.

Copper Cliff

May 12th

Dear Father + Sisters,

I have not received

any letters from home now for

nearly three weeks. There was

a smash up on the Toronto line

some four or five days ago and I guess

what was coming was lost there.

We are having beautiful weather

now again, alltho[sic] last week we

had 4° of frost and a little snow

storm. We have started up a

good football team here this

season and lots of the fellows

are taking great Interest in it, but

of course the great National

game is Base-ball something

like what we call rounders home.

This is another view of the plant

+ perhaps you will be surprised

to see a small lake there. All

our furnaces are fitted with

water-jackets + this water is…

…pumped all through these

water-jackets + back into the

lake again. This water is

purified every week with

soda-ash. This is a photo of

part of another street, you will

notice that every house has a

verandah, quite different from old

Country style. Tommy is expecting

his brother out here every day.

He is an Electrician + ought

to do well. Do you see anything

in the papers home about the

fun they are having in the

Canadian parliament of this

naval bill. I think they will

have to go to the Country at

the finish. There are lots of new

houses going up here and if

they still keep going this will

be quite a town pretty soon.

I'm just going to have

a kick around, give my regards

to all. Len
