High River Teen Town

High River Teen Town was a gathering place for young people aged 12 and up. With roots back into the early 40s, Teen Town was an important part of the area youth's social life.

Teens got together - at the Credit Union Hall or the Oddfellows Hall - every Friday evening to enjoy "Canteen Night". From 7:45 to 11:00 p.m they would play games, bingo, table tennis, sing and dance. They enjoyed folk dancing and did basic waltz steps. The winning dance teams received tickets to the theatre.

In 1945, Teen Town held a Revue in the Opera House. They preformed skits, choruses, dances and a ballet number. Much of the music was original or arranged by the teens themselves, as was the choreography, direction and accompanying piano music.

Since the first Revue was such a success, Teen Town began to sponser more. They also planned dances and held an annual Teen Queen contest. The Teen Queen contest was a very formal occasion - with official judging, a formal tea and interviews to pick the winning girl. A grand dance would follow the crowning of the Queen, who would then appear in events around Alberta.

High River hosted a number of Teen Town conferences.
