relive what once was the very
core of their existence. The
changes to the forestry
industry had a dramatic
effect on their way of life.
The familiar names that
appear throughout the exhibit
are the names that can be
found in each community
today.

   The genealogy of this
region is reflected in the
exhibit. Finding out a
person’s surname most often
linked them with a town or
community in the region.
These family names have
survived over the years
despite the challenges they
have faced.

   Perhaps the biggest
challenges to this region are
the high unemployment and the
out migration being
experienced throughout the
region. Tourism is becoming
a major industry along the
Viking Trail on the Great
Northern Peninsula of
Newfoundland and Labrador.

Perhaps the stories that are
being told and the “Visiting
the Memories of Our Past” may
help to support that future
for this unique and rural
part of Newfoundland and
Labrador.
   This exhibit would not be
possible without the co-
operation of the Big Droke
