Pushthrough, Raymond's Point,
Round Harbour and Stone
Valley began the resettlement
process. New communities
"within the community" sprung
up and comfort was found in
the amenities that larger
communities provided.
   By the '70s, many
students were getting a

higher education. They
returned home, spread new
ideas, set up new job
opportunities and
intermarried. Medical
problems were gradually being
treated by the doctors who
found the outport life more
amicable and stayed for
longer periods. Teachers

settled down and became a
stable part of a given
community, living conditions
were so much better.
   The Smallwood government,
largely responsible for
getting people out of small
communities, encouraged the
move by giving monetary
donations, to alleviate the

hardships of the move.
   No one could anticipate
how the move would affect the
generation. There was much
happiness on the surface and
people appreciated being near
the hospital and larger
schools but deep down the
longing for the old ways
stayed. Stories of this era
