Point Leamington: The River

CHAPTER 5

Prominent Citizens

Founded in 1870, incorporated in 1970, the community of Point Leamington, Newfoundland, Canada has had its highs and lows like any other community. Through the good times and the bad times, however, it has been a proud community. Newfoundland Premier Joseph R. Smallwood's statement, in a television address to the province during the I.W.A. strike of 1959, "a decent Christian province, God-fearing people" well describes the people of this community.

The community has wittnessed two World Wars, where many of its citizens were enlisted and some made the ultimate sacrifice. A community sharing the grief and the joys as the news of soldiers reached home.

In 1923-1925, two diseases, Diptheria and Tuberculosis (known as consumption then) were common to the area. Many died and many more died during the Depression.

The Depression (the dirty thirties, as it was called) brought a lot of poverty and disease to the area. Many families struggled, not knowing where their next meal was coming from. Many (especially young children) suffered of malnutrition and scurvey. Tuberculosis still claimed lives.

Without the help and support of community members in these hard times, many families would not have survived. From a kind and generous neighbour to a sympathatic listener, there are many stories told about the hard times and how the citizens of the community rallied together to support each other. Eventhough a lot of things have changed, especially economically, the outpouring of kindness and sympathy are still two very prominent features in this community today. Still a proud people, still rallying together to help a person in need.

Each and every resident has played an important role in the development of this community. First and foremost are the Veterans who went to war and fought for this country and what it believed in. Then Clergy, Teachers, Loggers, Sawmill Operators, Fishermen, Organization Leaders, Business Owners/Operators/Workers, Postal Workers, Community Service Volunteers, Mayors, Councillors, Health Care Givers, Factory Workers and Libarians. However, there are some residents, past and present, who deserve honourable mention, people who have surpassed expectation in their roles as citizens of this community.
