The Royal Canadian Air Force

The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) was founded in 1924. During the Second World War the Canadian forces were sent overseas to help protect the Allies. Canadians were first sent to France but gained recognition from the battles over Britain. It was said to be the first time that air power saved a nation. Over 100 Canadians flew on fighting operations over Britain and another 200 fought with the R.A.F.'s Bomber and Coastal Commands. This was the first time that Canadians flew in Canadian units and the leadership shown through these exceptional pilots led to further development of the Royal Canadian Air Force.
