Stories from the Homefront: Oshawa During the Second World War

TRANSCRIPT

Media

During World War II, like today, the only way to find out what was going on in the world was through the media. For those on the homefront media included the radio, newsreels and the newspaper. During the war, much of the information regarding the war or the weather would be delayed to ensure that the Germans could not discover information that could be used as a threat against the public. The radio was one of the most popular forms of communication and listeners would tune into the CBC or the BBC to gather information regarding the war. Local theaters in the area would often show Movie Tone newsreels of live footage of the war. Residents of Oshawa would obtain information from the Toronto Newspaper and their local paper called the Times-Gazette.
