Thunder Bay Military Museum History Series: HMCS GRIFFON

TRANSCRIPT

In 1964 the "sea reserve" hit its lowest point. Authorized numbers dropped to 3,000 all-ranks and five naval reserve divisions were permanently closed. Locally, efforts were made to ensure the continued naval presence at the Lakehead. Through local members of parliament, the Division worked to keep the federal government aware of the regional, as well as local, benefits they provided.

The naval base itself underwent changes in the post-war period. The Division received material from surplus war vessels after World War II which were incorporated into the facility. A rifle range was opened in 1965 and just inside the main gate a cairn was erected to honour the local naval war dead of the Second World War.
