Thunder Bay Military Museum History Series: HMCS GRIFFON

TRANSCRIPT

On 03 September 1939 at the outbreak of World War Two, the Canadian military was mobilized. On that day, the first ten men of the Port Arthur Division were placed on active service. Two days later, recruiting for war began in the Lakehead. The zone of recruiting for the Port Arthur Naval Division was from Sault St. Marie to the Manitoba border, although a number of people from those centres went to Winnipeg to enlist. Within days, the federal government approved a doubling of the navy, which turned out to be only the first of several such approvals.
