Some of the more unusual and least known were the members of the "DEMS", the navy gunners who were assigned to man guns on "Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships" including locally Mr Robert (Bob) Hughes, an ex-member of the Lake Superior Regiment and brother of Lieutenant Jack Hughes RCNVR.
