Thunder Bay Military Museum History Series: HMCS GRIFFON

TRANSCRIPT

At the end of WWII, Korea, which had been a Japanese colony, was divided into two zones; a Communist North Korea, and a western-oriented South Korea. The Korean War took place between 1950 and 1953 on the Korean Peninsula. Hostilities began on June 25, 1950 when North Korean forces invaded South Korea for control of the Peninsula. The United Nations, on motion by the United States of America, voted for intercession on behalf of South Korea and some time later the People's Republic of China gave support to the North.

The Korean War was of very little impact on the RCN(R). The need to activate reservists was minimal, but they were involved in recruiting and processing transfers to the RCN. Sailors from North Western Ontario served on ships which served in the Korean theatre.
