In the morning, we ate breakfast in silence. We began other meals in silence, and then received permission to talk. After saying grace and reciting a blessing, we'd receive the signal to talk. We were always in a real hurry for this. There were so many restrictions that whenever we got permission to do something, we enjoyed it to the hilt. When the meal was over, silence had to be observed again for doing the dishes.
