King Seaman - His Legacy Continues

TRANSCRIPT

Well, I remember this ferry the 'Little Dan', run fromthe narrows in Minudie.
Was that the one that operated out of Barrosnfield or right down at Minudie?
It was at Minudie.
At Minudie?
Yes. They had a floating wharf there and when they had to have the cattle,or hay or feed or something like that, they took it on this barge and the barge towed, or the ferry towed the barge, and it come into this floating wharf at Minudie. And it was always nearly the level of the boat and they'd drive them off there.
A friend was telling a story of bringing a cow across there and the wharf wasn't working right, or something like that, so they pushed the cow overboard and it swam ashore!
I don't know when it started, but it was running when I was a kid.
This was the one Downey was running. Before that I don't know. I don't know when this 'Little Dan' started to run across there but it was running as far back as I can remember.
I remember quite well, cos at noon hour, if the boat was in at the wharf, us kids at the school, after we had our lunch, would run down to the wharf and stay around there until it was nearly time to go back to school.
Barry Sherwood was running off and on the boat with Captain Downey, and Barry was a pretty nice guy and he used to take us kids and show us around, you know, and he thought we were pretty good and we did too.
The last time I think it run, I think the last summer was 28 and so they say and thats what Irene (his sister) has down.
When Captain Downey was down and Barry took over the boat, Laurie Glenn went with him the first season and maybe more, cos I know he was working there. Then my father worked on it and I don't know if it was one, two or three years but he worked there. Later, the late Willie Glenn that lived out in Maccan, he was on that. He was on quite a few summers and he was on it when it made the last trip in 28. Later years it wasn't a paying proposition because there wasn't enough traffic.
