Dutch Heritage in Prince Edward County

TRANSCRIPT

'My mother's family had an antique wall clock, it had very ornate carving on it, big brass, weights hanging down on chains and it was left behind in lieu of a rock. In Holland they would do sauerkraut once a year and also beans. And my grandmother, she really wrestled with whether or not to bring her sauerkraut crock rock or bring the antique wall clock. To me the choice would have been very easy. However, as I said before, they didn't think there were rocks in Canada. There weren't rocks in Holland and the sauerkraut rock had been passed down from generation to generation. That was the rock for making sauerkraut and it had to be packed up in the box as well, and because it was a question of weight, the clock stayed in Holland.'
