Dutch Heritage in Prince Edward County

TRANSCRIPT

'My parents dairy farmed. My grandparents on my fathers side lived right next door in the other half of the house, so I remember as a little kid I was always at my Oma's house. As soon as you went in the front door of Oma and Opa's house you spoke Dutch. From the time I was old enough to speak, to the time that I went to school, I heard as much Dutch as I did English. With my brother it was even more intense, uh, he was completely submerged in Dutch until he'd attended kindergarten for about two weeks and the kindergarten teacher phoned up my parents and said 'We seem to have a bit of a language barrier. You're son does not speak English, or seemingly does not want to converse with other kids, and we've determined it is because he's not comfortable with the language. At that point I think my parents got a little bit nervous and thought they had better speak some English in the house.'
