Walter Noice, born in Minden February 28th 1895, worked in the Minden drug store as a student, often cleaning up after the minor surgeries that went on in the back of the store.
This knowledge proved useful when, after completing school, he moved out west and took a job as a travelling salesman selling surgical instruments. The day war was declared, Walter, still out west, registered with the 10th Field Ambulance Corps.
It was in Winnipeg that he met and married Mavis Marshal on February 1st 1916. Only 26 days later Walter was shipped overseas to France, where he was eventually transferred to the 75th Battalion.
While Walter was overseas, his sister Ida joined the army as a nurse and was stationed at Davisville hospital, Toronto.
Walter's brothers Frederick and William had also joined the army. Frederick was a lieutenant and quartermaster of the Duchess of Connaught Hospital in England. William was a Private who, like Walter, was wounded in action.
The three brothers had a remarkable occurrence when both Walter and William were sent to be treated for their injuries at the Duchess of Connaught Hospital.
Walter had a further family experience after being treated in England when he was sent back to Canada via hospital ship to Davisville Hospital and met up with his sister.
After the war, Walter went on to operate several drug stores around Toronto and retired in the Township of Minden Hills. Ida resigned from the army and went into private nursing and, like her brother, retired back to Minden.
