E. J. Casey: From Soldier to Showman

TRANSCRIPT

"First I signed up to work my 1935 season with Henry Meyerhoff Crescent Shows from Penticton, B.C. The 'B' circuit of Western Fairs had no midway attraction, so I joined Henry for experience. With a travelling outfit, our first fair was Carman. My shows consisted of a merry-go-round, Mickey Mouse sideshow, crown and anchor game and an over and under game. My son Ted, 14 years old, operated the merry-go-round. I operated the crown and anchor, a fellow by the name of McDonald ran the over and under. I purchased a new Chevy truck from Carter Motors, a big one, three ton. Meyerhoff had four rides, two sideshows and ten concessions. All my equipment I carried in my Chevy truck, while Henry's Crescent Shows travelled by train, as they carried the grandstand show's props and the help for the grandstand show. All of this was carried by special train and played the 13 'B' class fairs on the circuit. I had no difficulty making the circuit by truck although the roads were not very good back in 1935. We made it and no delay. This was quite a surprise for the officers of the 'B' circuit who had depended on the train for transportation."
