"Professor Valjean's ten-in-one sideshow was a most popular entertainment with the western people. Valjean was a magician; among his acts during the ten years he travelled with me was "The Headless Woman," "Sawing a Woman in Half," "The Guillotine," "The Electric Chair, "and "The Ghost Clock." Professor Valjean and his very clever and attractive wife put on a very realistic show. In fact many times we were called to escort someone out from the show tent. They took his acts too serious, for instance, when the "Guillotine" blade came down and the ketchup would fly with the head cut off. Everything with Professor Valjean was so realistic, some people would faint, they thought everything really was happening."
