TRANSCRIPT

There was always plenty, plenty, a farmer had plenty in them days. Now I remember one year, mother...The next door neighbour, they had a lot of sickness that year. So we had a beautiful big garden, and that fall Mother did a lot of pickling and preserving, and the men gathered up all the winter vegetables and set that place up for the winter. With a family, they had children.
Those are the things I remember very clearly and we were so happy doing that, so happy.
My mother would say; now listen Frances, you go downstairs. We had those big self sealer bottles in those days. Big and little bottles. Big self sealers they were called. Some I imagine would be two litres they'd call them now, we called them quarts.
I remember mother said; now you go down to the basement and you bring me up four, of what we called them self sealers. So I brought them up and what our mother was doing, she filled those. Chow was one there, and the other was..we used to have marsh cranberries. You can still get them you know. And I remember her filling those four sealers and they was put aside for the next door neighbour. I remember that real well.
See I was brought up that way. We shared, we shared. Some difference now campared to then, but nothing I can do is there. Very happy then. And my goodness, I'd go down there. 'Well Jenny, what you going to have for supper tonight? the next door neighbour would say. Well she said, 'We got a lot of lovely fresh cod fish'. They were just white and beautiful, white fresh codfish, and she said: 'I've got more than I want, would you like some?' 'Yes, tell Frances bring over some codfish'. So mother gathered up this great big bowl of codfish, and they had codfish for supper to!
That's the way we were brought up, you know. So much happiness, no comparison. No comparison with today.
