There were many reasons why the town declined. From its beginning, the GRNC was not well managed. There were disputes between the directors, the company was holding a heavy debt load and was always short of cash. In 1859, the GRNC Directors stated their financial situation was hopeless. The opposition by the Six Nations also delayed settlement along the river and discouraged use of the navigation company.
