Canada officially declared war on September 10th and that happened to be a Sunday when the Star Phoenix did not publish a paper. From September 1939 until the end of 1945 Saskatoon would become a center supporting military training in addition to supporting agriculture. Training for all three services of land, sea, and air were supported. So I enlisted in 1941 and I was posted to the Manning Depot in Edmonton Alberta. I did some guard duty and miscelaneous things and after being there three months I was posted to No. 4 Initial School in Edmonton. We took schooling at the University of Alberta. After<br /> doing ground work there I was posted to No.5 Elementary Flying School at High River Alberta where I learnt to fly on the Tiger Moth. One interesting thing about the Tiger Moth was on my very first solo after doing some aerobatics, my engine stalled and I had to make a forced landing in a summer fallow field and I thought I am going to get washed out for that. But I was in no fear there at all and my instructor said to me "No that is a big plus for you by landing in a summer fallow field". So after that, a couple of months there I was posted to Saskatoon Saskatchewan's No. 4 <!-SCT-->Service Flying School<br /> Where I got my wings on December the 12th 1942.
