It took ten obliging and somewhat surprised men to carry the car ashore over the sandy beach and into a village without roads.

At that time the community was a collection of homes with two churches, the trading post and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police post connected by wagon and foot paths.

During that summer George hired local people for $5.00 a day to help him widen the trails; eventually they built a five mile road from Teslin to Fox Creek.

Years later in 1942, the American Army bushwhacked its way to Teslin, building the Alaska Highway as part of the war effort. Local tales describe the astonishment of exhausted crews when they were given the gift of five miles of ready road. It was immediately incorporated into the military highway.

George always knew that his winter roads would be the frozen surfaces of Teslin Lake and Teslin River, and several nearby water courses. Between December and May he had over ninety miles of ice highways for hunting, trapping and ice-fishing.
