Between the years of 1874 and 1885 (inclusive) Yarmouth was the second largest port of registry in Canada following Saint John, New Brunswick. This was in terms of the total tonnage; meaning that Yarmouth vessels' carrying capacity was second only to that of Saint John vessels. Yarmouth's tonnage peaked at 453 vessels aggregating 166,623 tons in 1878. Other ports such as Halifax and Montreal had more vessels but the total tonnage of these vessels was less than that of Yarmouth. At this time Canada was the fourth leading shipping nation in the world.
