On retirement from the sea the captains turned their hands to many other jobs - some retired to the farm while others, such as Capt. Arthur Hilton taught Navigation and other nautical subjects while in charge of the Navigation School in Yarmouth. One of his pupils was Molly Kool who, in 1939, became the first woman in North America to receive her Master Mariner's Certificate of Competency.
