Bert Orleans installed three waterslides, each standing sixty feet high. One, a freefall-style waterslide, was christened the Cannonball. After 1987 a group visit from a Christian school, 'one girl was seen giving thanks after having come safely down the Cannonball run.' The waterslides were popular with children and youth, and the lineup was out the door on `2-for-1 Wednesdays.'

Orleans chose the name 'Mount Layton Hot Springs Resort' when he was unable to register the name 'Lakelse Hot Springs Resort.' Mt. Layton Hot Springs Resort was named after the mountain located across the highway and to the east of the hot springs. In turn, the mountain was named for R. B. Layton, who had lived in a cabin at its foot. Ted Johnston recollects that Layton came to the area with his brother around 1910 to pre-empt a section of land south of Williams Creek. Later, Johnston notes, 'Layton went overseas during the First World War and when he returned, he took a correspondence course in architecture. He left for New York where he could put his profession to use.'

One of Orleans' more unbelievable plans was the construction of an island on Lakelse Lake. In 1991, Orleans told the local media that he was planning to develop a 'theme village' on an island that would be created through canal work adjacent to the original hot springs canal constructed by Ray Skoglund. He intended to add private cabins and meeting rooms, and would market his concept to corporate groups of up to 60 people looking for a secluded retreat.
