Join us on a journey through a century of travel. It's 1906. We begin at the site of the formation of a new town, in the year old province of Saskatchewan. This site is designated to be a C.P.R. Town named Lanigan. It will be named after Mr. William Blackstock Lanigan who was superintendent of freight traffic of the western lines and will be of great railroad importance.

As we walk, there are no roads, only grassy cart and buffalo trails. We explore the land surrounding the Lanigan town site and find sandy soil, rolling prairie grassland, creeks, clumps of willows and stunted poplar trees. Wild life is abundant with deer, antelope, rabbits and many kinds of noisy waterfowl nesting around the numerous sloughs. A deep rutted trail, named the Carlton Trail meanders across this area from the SE to the NW. The settlers used oxen, horses and teams of both that were hitched to wagons to carry supplies, machinery, lumber and mail and even homesteaders and their belongings along this trail.

1905, 1906 and 1907 saw a wave of homesteaders, mostly young men, intent on procuring land. As we walk along our trail curves around bush and water. Young men ride by on horseback. Maybe they plan to call on a young lady whose father has established a homestead along this trail, or maybe they're looking for a stake to claim their own homestead. Land Company Agents are driving prospective buyers and homesteaders to view available land with matched teams and buggies. We meet a team and wagon crowded with a large family.

As we marvel at the beauty of this new land, we know that soon roads will be built on the allowances between the surveyor's stakes and the C.P.R. stakes are already in place for the railroad. Our new town site of Lanigan is about to BOOM.
