Communications in rural Ontario were very much improved by the invention of the telephone in the 1890s. In the beginning only business and professional people had telephones, but as small telephone companies were formed with local people the use of the telephone became wide spread.

The Davis Telephone Company was a family company and an important part of the development of communications in this rural community. It also reflects the changes the telephone brought to the average family. The modern development of the telephone system brought better security for emergencies such as fire, illness and injury. The event made for easier communications for doing business. Social interaction with neighbours, friends and family became a happy part of everyday life.
