Area Schools

It would appear that education progressed fairly well in the Pioneer days. A one room log school house was located on what is now known as Woermke Road behind the Forestry Headquarters on the far side of Corry Lake. This was in McKay Township. This dated back from 1883 to 1905 at which time the Department of National Defence bought up this property for training purposes. Except for children from the village itself, children from a four mile radius would have attended this school.

In the Clarksville section of Chalk River, south of the railway yard, at the site where the Anglican Church was later built, a one room log school house was built in 1884 for the price of $400.00. At first it housed 50 pupils and later 70 pupils attended. This building was later dismantled and a stable built from it at the Primeau farm . Near the same site a new two story school building housing two classrooms was erected in 1899 at a cost of $1,400.00. This school and its predecessor were known as School Section No. 1 Buchanan. A Miss Frier was the teacher in the old school and a Miss Tuffy and a Miss Sadler were teachers in the new S.S.#1 Buchanan.

In 1923-24 a new school, SS#3 Buchanan, was built on the East side of the railway yard. It consisted of 4 rooms and later expanded to 6 rooms. In SS#3, pupils received their Junior Matriculation , (Grade 12) and had to go to Pembroke for the Senior Matriculation (Grade 13).

Due to amalgamation of rural schools in 1965-66, and because extensive repairs were needed to S.S.#3, the public school children were transported by buss to Deep River. The separate school which was operation by this time remained open in a school building constructed behind the Catholic Church in 1946.
