Boy Scouts-

In 1953, Mr Harry Lavigne , along with the able assistance of Brian Mayo, James Lamonte and Walter Smith, formed the Chalk River Boy Scouts Pack. The pack consisted of six boys at that time but interest grew to a point where the membership warranted a hall. An old school from Wylie Township was purchased and moved to it's present site in the Village. During the early history of this Scout movement, in January 1964, a local boy, Roger Leclerc Barrand received the Silver Cross medal from Governor General Vanier for saving the life of Kieth Smith from drowning. Kieth had suffered from over-exposure after falling through a hole in the ice on Corry Lake.

Royal Canadian Legion-

In 1956, Branch 562 of the Royal Canadian Legion was granted a charter under the presidency of Mr. George Hepburn and Vice President Mr. Doug Frivalt. At that time , there was a potential of 128 members from Chalk River and district, however the branch started out with 31 members and no hall. Meetings were held at the Chalk River Hotel until such time as land could be bought and a building erected. An old stable, formerly part of the Chalk River Dairy, was purchased and renovated to suit the needs and later expanded to it's present size.

Within two years after the resignation of Mr Hepburn, the new president Mr. Frivalt was instrumental in forming a Ladies Auxiliary, headed by President Cecelia Gibson.

The Chalk River Cenotaph was first installed near the CPR Station in 1951. In 1965 it was relocated to a site adjacent to the Luthern cemetery, the location of this picture. In 2001 due to safety considerations with the increasing Highway traffic the Cenotaph was again moved and placed on the Legion grounds.

Chalk River held a very good record in proportion to population regarding enlistment in the armed forces during the Second World War. It is sad to say that three of the boys did not return. Three casualties from the second World War include Leslie McQuestion, son of the late Mr and Mrs Victor McQuestioon; Leonard Kennedy, son of the late Mr and Mrs Wm. Kennedy and brother of Mrs Jean Taylor; and Bernard Owens, son of Mr and Mrs Wm. Owens, brother of Mrs Laura LaChance, Mrs Ada McCarthy, and Mr Bill Owens. The casualty from the first world War was Peter William Bryant. These names as well as the names of other boys killed from the surrounding area can be seen on the cenotaph in the Village.

CHALK RIVER LEGION GIVES LAND MONEY TO VILLAGE
The Chalk River Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion has decided to advance to the Chalk River Village Council sufficient funds to purchase from Marathon Realty approximately 45 acres of land. to be used for the site of a water treatment plant and for recreational and municipal purposes. "This donation to the Village will be a great saving to all taxpayers and the beginning of a dream for future recreation and cultural facilities within Chalk River." said Councillor Pearl Osborne. This money will also make provincial recreation grants available to the village council. Earlier in the year council's Public Relations and Special Projects. Committee asked local service clubs and fund-raising groups to work with council on securing the land and building recreation facilities. The Chalk River Legion, Branch 562, decided that their contribution to this project would be the land purchase alone. "The Legion members felt that the Village desperately needed the land for sale by the CPR. Without possibly raising taxes for the people of the Village. There was no way that they could afford to purchase it." said the president of Branch 562, Jim Patterson. "We felt that because we have the available funds, this would be a great way to show our support for the community." Branch 562 also donated $1,000. to the Chalk River Library Board in answer to a letter requesting financial help.
As well the Chalk River Legion has decided to help the Chalk River scouts send two boys and one leader to the 1983 Jamboree in western Canada this summer. After the boys have completed their own fundraising projects. the Legion will donate whatever is needed to make up the total expense of $900 each.
All of the monies donated were taken from the Nevada Fund, an ongoing lottery which is run by the Legion and dedicated solely for use within the community and for charitable purposes.
