Undoubtedly, the story of the plane collision over Moose Jaw on April 8, 1954 was one of its highest profile stories in its history. The Times-Herald published two editions on that day. The first edition gave the immediate details of the crash. The second edition expanded on those details.

The press run for those two editions exceeded 20,000 copies and more than 9,000 were sold that day. Public interest in the disaster was brisk. One sales boy disposed of 250 copies in half an hour while another managed to sell 1,000 copies in total. In the vicinity of the disaster, 900 copies were sold in two hours.

By the evening of April 8, 1954, Canadian Pacific Airlines and Trans-Canada Air Lines brought in several chartered flights carrying news writers and photographers from the majority of Canada's daily papers. The offices of the Times-Herald became their headquarters.

A picture of the disaster taken by Moose Jaw Times-Herald photographer Ross Roach was awarded "Picture of the Month" by the Canadian Press, Canada's news-gathering service. Published in both editions of the Times-Herald on the day of the crash, the picture showed a flaming engine of the Trans-Canada Airlines plane beside the ruins of the Hume house.

Ross Roach and Murray Banks, another staff photographer who covered the air tragedy, made
400 prints of 13 pictures for the Canadian Press alone during the day of the crash and the day
that followed.
