Christina (Helpert) Synard's story:

The early morning sun was shining through the bedroom window on that late summer morning. A good day for our short boat trip as the water was calm and smooth.

This day we would take all our worldly belongings because there was no coming back. Myself and my family were becoming a part of Mr. Smallwood's dissolution of outport Newfoundland, otherwise known as "Resettlement".

Most of my friends had already moved, some houses had been floated away to another destination to become home to these families. My feelings and emotions were somewhat confused about what was happening. This was the only home I had ever known, the only friends I ever had. It was all disappearing before my eyes.

Some memories become vague over the years, but I distinctly remember packing my dolls and other few toys. These possessions meant the world to me and I was not going to leave them behind. Part of my heart and childhood would forever remain. I was just nine years old and had to prepare myself for the sudden changes which were about to occur in my life. New friends, new school, new teachers and above all, a new home.

On September 12, 1967, my family and I reluctantly left our home in Little Harbour West and moved inland to Parker's Cove.

Christina Synard is the daughter of the late Mary & Donald Helpert. She still resides in Parker's Cove where she and her husband Cyril Synard have raised their children Donny & Susan.
