As a leader of New Brunswick, federal cabinet minister, twice Lieutenant Governor and Father of Confederation, Sir Samuel Leonard Tilley's legacy is extensive. Within a year of his death the first complete biography of his life appeared with James Hannay's work, The Life and Times of Sir Leonard Tilley.

Herbert Tilley led a private life, dying in 1909 at the age of 41. LPD Tilley, however, followed in his father's footsteps and engaged in business and politics with ambitions to high political office.

In 1927 Canada prepared to celebrate the Diamond Anniversary of Confederation. For this sixtieth celebration, LPD Tilley, now serving in the Provincial Legislature, came to Gagetown and unveiled a plaque on the local Post Office recognizing Gagetown as the birthplace of his illustrious father. That same day, he placed a large framed photograph of Sir Samuel Leonard Tilley in the front hall of the then Dingee Hotel, his father's birthplace. The photograph has hung in the house, in the hall ever since.
