Captain Steve Burke fishes lobster, halibut & cod along with several other species. Steve and a couple of his friends were going out to fish halibut & codfish for their winter so I had the opportunity to experience halibut and mackeral fishing as it is today. Cod is basically the same sort of fishing as halibut only with smaller hooks but we did not catch any on this day.

Fishing a codfish trawl off the shores of Grosse Isle North on the Cod Shoal. Cod season opens for certain periods at a time and it has a quota that varies every year. It is determined by Fisheries & Oceans, Canada what dates it will be opened. Today the codfish aren't so plentiful as they were in days gone by but Gary Clarke from East Cape, Magdalen Islands, Quebec remembers when they were and says he remembers having caught a codfish that was as long as what he was tall.

Halibut caught on a codfish trawl. You will more likely see a halibut on a codfish trawl than a codfish on a halibut trawl because of the size of the hooks.

Here we see halibut caught on a codfish trawl. A codfish trawl is generally made out of 12 gage hooks with 60-65 hooks depending on the distance in between. Halibut trawls are made with 14 - 16 gage hooks and have between 50-55 hooks per trawl. A halibut can be caught on codfish trawl but it is more unlikely that a cod will be caught on a halibut trawl because of the size of the hooks.
