The hockey team came into existence in the cadet year 1955-56, the second year of the squadron. That year the squadron was opened up to all boys of the comunity thus allowing boys from other religions to enrol. The boys had always played on Carbonear Pond, Lily Pond or Rossiter's Pond and some were very good players. The Jubilee Rink was used for home games and practise.

The "Carbonear Jubilee Rink" was built, owned and operated by the W. F. Howell family of Carbonear. The rink was the second such facility built by "Billy" Howell, as the first one was destroyed by a wind storm. The "Jubilee" was constructed in 1935 by Roy Howell, Fred Howell, and brother-in-law, Mark Badcock. The rink, the first wooden enclosed facility in Conception Bay, was operated by Roy Howell until 1955. It was in this rink that the Air Cadets played their first game in 1956. It was then sold sometime after this date to the Carbonear Kiwanis Club who ran it for only a short time. It was then demolished in the early 60's after the S.W. Moores Memorial Stadium opened in nearby Harbour Grace. This photograph was taken by Cyril Bishop, a well known photographer in Carbonear. It is interesting to note that in 2003, the "Howell Family" were inaugurated into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame in the "builder" category for their contribution to hockey in the Conception Bay area.

On Saturday, Feburary 18, 1956, at 7:00 P.M. three bus loads of cadets and their girlfriends left Carbonear to travel to St. John's. The trip took approximately 2 hours but there was lots to talk about and plenty of fun to be had. Everyone was looking forward to the day ahead. A hockey game was played in the afternoon at the Prince of Wales Rink between the Carbonear Cadets and the Cadets of 514 Squadron of St. John's. These two squadrons had a friendly rivalry and often visited each other for parades. The score was 14-0 for the Carbonear cadets. Scoring for Carbonear were Ern Cole-5, Jim Penney-3, Carl Penney-2, and Fred Rossiter, Pat Dooley, Johnny George, and Billy Pumphrey one each. After the game there was general skating or rifle shooting on the range.
