The Newfoundland Power & Paper Company had intended to construct a mill in Deer Lake, Newfoundland based on the fact that electrical power could not be transmitted far. Therefore, paper mills had been built where they could be connected directly to power plants. Just as site preparation for a mill at Deer Lake was about to begin, a technological breakthrough made it possible to transmit electricity over great distances. The notion of locating the mill in Deer Lake was therefore abandoned in favour of the economical advantages of a salt water port. There, ships could dock and load their cargoes of newsprint directly at the mill.
