H.M. Klassen, one of the first influential businessmen, built a beautiful home for his large family. The very early school classrooms were held in his earlier home and this building later became the first Herbert Hospital.

Henry M. Klassen chose Herbert as a favorable area to set up business, after selling his business in Manitoba in 1903. He was sure many settlers would arrive over the next years and he would select property and have his business operational when settlers arrived.

H.M. Klassen had distributed the first mail in the community but soon a Post Office was constructed with staff hired.

H.M. Klassen built a power plant in 1913. For many years Andy Imrie managed the new plant and Maurice Piot worked for him. Maurice married Elsie Wiebe, teacher.
