THE MALOTT FAMILY

Everett Malott came from Leamington, Ontario, filing on his homestead in the Gadsby district in 1903.

He batched with Henry Sayers, until 1904, when his cousin, Andrew Coatsworth came out from Ontario to homestead, and helped Everett build his log house. Andrew didn't care for the pioneer life, and soon returned to Ontario.

Everett loved landscaping and planted trees and bushes around his home, especially fruit bearing ones.

In the spring of 1905, he met his wife, Frances on a visit to the Perry home, where he was always welcome. The Perry's were her parents, and she was out from Montreal for a visit.

They were married the next spring.

Frances was good at making butter, and sold it at the store for groceries.

They sold the farm in early 1913, and left for awhile due to Everett's poor health, then moved back to the area at the end of 1914.

Everett was active with the school district, and helped form the Tees North Mutural Telephone Company, and both Everett and Frances were active with the church.

Here is Everett Malott breaking land on his homestead, somewhere around 1905.

He first borrowed a yoke of oxen from Carl Courser to do his initial breaking, but although Everett was an experienced driver, he had no skill with oxen.

Once the day grew warm, the thirsty oxen headed for a slough, where they waded in, plow and all. They filled up with water, then lay down and refused to go back to work.

In this photo Everett is using horses, so it must have been taken 'after' his oxen experience.

Note the old washing machine and ice cream can on the porch, and the strings up all along the house front for the hop vines to climb.

This photo is out in the corral, most likely auctioning off the animals.

And in this photo, we see some ladies chatting together with their children close by.

Perhaps they are saying their goodbyes to Mrs. Everett, while their husbands attend to the business.
