Henry Sayers - born in England 1862
Arthur Sayers - born in England 1867
Brothers

They were small boys when their parents died. Both stayed with their grandmother for awhile in England before being sent to live with an aunt in Ontario, Canada. Later they were adopted into different families. Henry became a farmer, and Arthur a stone mason.

Henry married Olive Deshane, and they had two children, Margaret and Lester. Arthur married Carrie Rodgers, and they had five children.

Together, at the turn of the century they brought their families out west searching for a better life.

They arrived in Strathcona, Alberta in 1900, where Henry's wife died. Never the less, they pressed on to Ponoka, filing on homesteads in the Chain Lakes (Rutherford district) area.

Arthur stayed, working as a stone mason in various towns nearby, however Henry went back to Ontario in 1904, where he met and married Mina Hanes.

Henry brought his new wife back to the homestead here in Alberta, arriving March 20, 1906. Our records state that his daughter, Margaret came with them, however the photo we have of the family taken here, shows both Margaret and her brother Lester, so we suspect they both came back with Henry and Mina .

Henry farmed for the rest of his life, and was active with the school board in the Rutherford district.

He and his wife welcomed all into their home, and helped out during illnesses. Henry was often also called on to act as an undertaker.

Henry and Mina had two children, George and Lillian.

Hard work, stacking bundles on the Sayers farm. Henry Sayers is standing on the stack, with a hired man forking him bundles from the rack.

One story told about Henry was that before he was married, he had a milk cow that he turned loose on the range. Whenever he heard her bell, he would run out and milk her. Henry said that he didn't worry about milking her regularly because she had a much better place to keep the milk than he did.

We suspect that his cow must have also known to come close enough to the house for Henry to hear her bell whenever she needed to be milked.
