Merna Shields in conversation with Carrie Trout

"This picture is of my brother, my older brother, Lloyd [Anderson]. And the horse he was on is 'Lady.' She was a thoroughbred horse…and black.

And one day when he had to ride to school; he rode three and a half miles to school and it was in the wintertime and a blizzard come up, and so the teacher sent the kids all home. And Dad started out with a team and sleigh to go get him.
And, they went all the way to the school and didn't find him. And, so then he turned around and come back. And when he got about halfway home, then he decided he'd go down to the neighbour's place just to check and see where, 'cause he couldn't see the little guy anyplace.

And here the horse had gone down to the neighbour's place and walked up to the kitchen door and stopped. And so, they were able to take him in and put the horse in the barn. And so, that's where he found that horse."

Norvan Boon in conversation with Carrie Trout

June 2005, Drumheller, Alberta

Norvan Boon: "One time my wife and family and I went for a holiday. And prior to going to, on this holiday, we kept back twenty-five heifers for replacement heifers. And when I got back from the holiday, there was only half of them there.

So I went riding through the ranch to find the rest of them hopefully. And after several days of riding, I checked this pasture, that pasture, whatever I thought they may be. Anyway this time I was riding back home and I saw some mares and an Arabian stallion. So I thought, well those cattle on the other side, I haven't checked them. So I went to check 'em and as soon as this stallion saw me, he whinnied and my horse just stopped immediately.

Anyway, I thought well this is odd, so I kicked him in the ribs and he took one step and that stallion came after me and I went over the hill just like a bunny rabbit. This stallion was just a screaming and he was only a rod behind me. And I knew I was either going to get killed or the horse was going to get hurt.

So I took my lasso and my lariat rope and I swung it and hit him right smack in the eye. Well, with that sudden, smack in the eye, he stopped and then of course I gained on him, but, that's how close I come to either getting killed or dragging me off the horse."

John Shields in conversation with Carrie Trout

June 30, 2005, Hanna, Alberta

John Shields: "And that was in 1946 and I was sixteen years old and Merna was with me, and she's been my best pal EVER since… we started riding together and she was... she wasn't my girlfriend, she was just a friend of mine who loved riding horses 'cause she was a couple of years older than me so I'd never marry anybody older than me, it was somebody else who was younger. But then I became a Christian and God took those scales off my eyes and there was the most beautiful girl in the world, and she has been my dream girl and we'll be married 54 years this fall [2005]."
